5 tips for a safe and fun Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is all about love, but safety and inclusion are key to making the day special for everyone. Check out these tips to ensure a fun, allergy-safe celebration for you and your loved ones:

1. Plan ahead for treats: Valentine’s Day means cute heart-shaped candies, but these treats might come with changes in ingredients or production practices than their non-holiday counterparts. Always check the labels – do the triple check: once in the store, again at home, and once more before eating! If you have any doubts, contact the manufacturer to confirm everything is safe.

2. Non-food fun & classroom inclusivity: Check in with your child’s teacher to see if food will be part of the celebrations. If so, why not suggest non-food alternatives? Craft activities or thoughtful cards can make the day special without worrying about allergens. Just remember to read the labels on art supplies too!

3. Label reading reminder: Valentine’s Day is a great time to remind your child how important it is to read ingredient labels. Make sure they know to politely say “no thank you” if they’re offered treats that haven’t been approved by you. Also, teach them that if there’s no label, they should avoid it altogether. It’s all about empowering them to make safe choices!

4. Navigating love & allergies: Whether you’re in a new relationship or you’ve been together for a while, communication is key when it comes to food allergy. Be clear with your partner about which foods you’re allergic to, and work together to make sure you stay safe. From avoiding allergens before kissing to picking safe restaurants, it’s all about teamwork in the name of love!

5. Attending social events: Social gatherings often revolve around food, and that’s where communication is vital. Talk to the host ahead of time, and writing down key points to pass along to family and friends can ensure nothing gets missed. If you feel unsure about the food situation, bring your own safe option to enjoy. It’s a thoughtful, loving way to protect yourself while still being part of the fun!

These tips make it easy to enjoy Valentine’s Day while staying safe and making sure everyone feels included. Remember, a little planning goes a long way!
